Knit Stitch Dishcloth at Crochet Spot

The knit stitch is a remarkable stitch to use when you want something unique but still basic, because it is worked just like a single crochet, only shallower. Check out the tutorial for this stitch here!

Using this stitch for a dishcloth is a perfect way to add character to an everyday piece. Crochet this dishcloth in only a few hours or less and add it to your linen supplies for a rustic, handmade touch! And don’t be surprised when your friends want a few as well.

Tip: always use yarn made from natural fibers, specifically cotton and linen, for kitchen linens so that they won’t pill with constant use!

Crochet Pattern: Chunky Knit Stitch Mittens

Have you ever made a pair of mittens before? It may sound a little daunting if you haven’t but believe me, it’s really quite simple. Using the knit stitch, I’ve designed this simple mittens pattern to be basic enough for new crocheters.

Don’t let the details get you down. I suggest two ways of working this mittens pattern – following the instructions straight through, or sizing it accordingly as you go. If you’re the hands-on type (ahem, no pun intended), then I would recommend tailoring each step to your size. For example, try the cuff around your arm and adjust it appropriately. Then the length before the thumb, and next the opening. If you find my instructions don’t meet up with your sizing then simply subtract or add a row here and there. What is important about this pattern is the basic steps: cuff, wrist, thumb-hole, hand length, and thumb length.

How to Crochet the Knit Stitch

Have you ever wanted your crocheted garments to have that knit look without actually having to knit them? Let me show you how to crochet the knit stitch!

There’s something so classic about the stockinette stitch in knitting that makes us crocheters want to imitate it slightly in our own line of work. Sure, you could just learn to knit, or if you know how, switch to your needles instead of your hook. But when you can work a simple crochet stitch pattern and get the desired look, why compromise?

The knit stitch goes by many names: waistcoat stitch, center single crochet, center post single crochet, shallow single crochet. It can sound intimidating but don’t worry, it’s as simple as your basic single crochet with a slight alteration.

Free Crochet Pattern: Chunky Bun Beanie

Chunky Bun Beanie

In this beanie pattern I have compiled two popular elements in crochet right now, the bun beanie aspect and the crochet knit stitch. When I started designing this hat I didn’t intend to make it into a bun beanie but after coming to the end of the pattern it just seemed to be a good idea.

The single crochet stitch used in this pattern for the majority of the body is called many things — waistcoat stitch, center single crochet, center post single crochet, shallow single crochet, and the crochet knit stitch. However you call it, what attracts most people to the stitch is that it looks a whole lot like the stockinette stitch in knitting.

But don’t let this intimidate you, this is as easy as single crochet, because that is exactly what it is! By inserting the hook into the lower middle of each single crochet, you will have effectually created a “knit” crochet stitch. Have fun!

Have you noticed that crocheting plaid is becoming very popular? I have to admit, the color changes have always appeared daunting to me. However, I am not one to shy away from a challenge, and it’s a good thing, because I found out how simple it really is.

Once you have a good idea of the color pattern and easy method in color changing, you will be able to breeze right through this project.

Simple plaids, or gingham plaids, are worked in three different colors — a dark, mid, and light color. You will use the mid in each row, and alternate between the dark and the light in every other row.

Crochet Pattern: Chunky Basketweave Earwarmers

Posted in Free Crochet Patterns on October 25th, 2017 by Amy Yarbrough – Be the first to comment

In the winter, chunky and bulky yarns are my favorite to crochet with. I love the feel of the material as I crochet as well as how they wear or look when finished.

Another thing I find indispensable in the winter are earwarmers. My ears always freeze, so if I am not already wearing a hat, I must have earwarmers with me at all times. This pair of earwarmers is the perfect choice with it’s chunky yarn, basketweave stitch, and wooden buttons.

Make the earwarmers in four rows of basketweave material and then single crochet around for a finished piece. Buttons add just the right touch, and you don’t have to worry about buttonholes because the fabric creates them naturally.

Here’s to warm ears this coming winter!

Free Crochet Pattern: Country Chic Jar Cover

Posted in Free Crochet Patterns on August 30th, 2017 by Amy Yarbrough – Be the first to comment

I never tire of finding new ways to showcase granny squares! Designing with them always adds a little reminder of tradition to a modern style, and I am always in for a little retro. These little jars are great for holding tealights, or tiny potted plants, like succulents.

The pattern is quick and easy. First you will crochet 4 simple granny squares and border them in a round of white single crochet. Then you will join them using a simple single crochet method. There are tips at the bottom of this post explaining how to make this cover for a different sized jars, too.

Mini jars covered in granny squares are just too cute. I would love to see them lining a long table at a country themed wedding or party, wouldn’t you?!
