We’ve covered a lot of things you can do with a yarn and Afghan hook, but one thing has definitely been missing: afghans!
If you like blankets, why not start hooking up squares to put together in an Tunisian/Afghan afghan? Try this simple 6-inch square with an eyelet pattern that looks like a butterfly. It’s an easy pattern for anyone familiar with Tunisian crochet.

Crochet Pattern: Tunisian Eyelet Cowl

Posted in Free Crochet Patterns on October 25th, 2016 by Candace – 2 Comments
Talk about yummy and squishy! Tunisian crochet just seems to give the right amount of squishy bulk for winter projects. Take this cowl with its simple eyelet pattern. Made with a ball of DK weight yarn, it has a thickness that belies the yarn weight.
The cowl is a quick project for those familiar with Tunisian crochet and my Tunisian crochet in the round technique. (If your afghan hooks don’t have cords, you can work it flat and seam it together.) Remember to block after finishing to open the eyelets up.

While this may be a controversial position, I believe the chihuahua is both the cutest and mightiest of dogs! I am excited to share the love by designing this cute chihuahua ears headband. The ears are constructed separately and then affixed to a store-bought, plastic headband. This could be the beginning of an easy Halloween costume.

Skill Level:

Finished Size: Each ear measures 3″ (8 cm) wide, 3″ (8 cm) tall

Crochet Pattern: Lackadaisy Slouchy Hat

Posted in Free Crochet Patterns on October 11th, 2016 by Candace – Be the first to comment
Here’s a pattern that’s great for both simple and busy colorways. If you’re like me and love the speckled colorways that are popular now, you’ve been looking for the perfect pattern to use it on. Such a busy yarn would swallow anything too complicated, so keep it simple with alternating ridges. The hat has a slightly slouchy fit that can be adjusted by adding to or subtracting from the the height of the plain double crochet section. crochet_lackdaisy_hat

Crochet Pattern: Happy Links Necklace and Bracelet

I bought a bag of beautiful embroidery floss from the craft store and I have been loving the experimentation process. How can I combine different strands to achieve a different look? Since embroidery floss will always remind me of friendship bracelets, I wanted to make a chunky bangle to keep or give to a friend. I had so much fun with the technique that I kept going! The end result was a jewelry piece that could be used as a necklace or bracelet, featuring links that are perfect for attaching charms. Fun for adults, and kids, too!

My artistic heart has been strongly drawn towards mixed media and art journaling lately. While I am learning dozens of interesting techniques through watching instructional videos and devouring books, I am always thinking about how I could incorporate crochet into the mix. This tiny heart is perfect to tuck into a journal or attach to a page if crocheted in embroidery floss. If you decide to scale the hook and yarn size up, this cutie can embellish a hat or a bag. Switch up yarn color combinations for lots of mixed and matched fun!

Crochet Pattern: Ginevra Scarf

Posted in Free Crochet Patterns on August 30th, 2016 by Candace – 11 Comments
This scarf pattern actually came to be after I participated in a knitting mini challenge in which I got to try out the shaping for various types of shawls. I really enjoyed the asymmetrical shape, and knew that I needed to do a crochet project that used the same shaping. Between the eyelet pattern and the simple triangular shaping, the scarf has plenty of visual interest while being easy to work. crochet_ginevra_scarf

Crochet Pattern: Rosalind Scarf

Posted in Free Crochet Patterns on August 23rd, 2016 by Candace – Be the first to comment
Don’t let the holes fool you. You can be warm and snug with a thick, lacy scarf. The combination of bulky yarn, a thick afghan hook, and Tunisian crochet makes for a scarf that is super squishy. You’ll be ready for winter in no time.

This pattern requires familiarity with Tunisian crochet. Click the link for a great list of resources if you’re just learning or even if you just want to learn more.
