Crochet Is the New Black

Have you seen that TV series on Netflix called Orange Is the New Black? Well, it’s like one of those series that just sucks you in and before you know it you’ve watched the entire season in just a few nights. The story is about a woman who spends 15 months in jail for being a drug mule – transporting drug money in a suitcase. The twist is that the “unlikely” protagonist is well educated, cultured and affluent. As you could guess, she seems like a fish out of water at the minimum security women’s prison in Connecticut.

It’s a fun show with rich stories, but the reason I’m writing today is of course about CROCHET! While watching the series, I was delighted to find several scenes where the prisoners sport crocheted fashions, like this adorable hat.

The horizontal ribbing is achieved by crocheting in the back loop only in the round. The pretty edging on the visor is likely crab stitch, also known as reverse single crochet.

There is even a scene where the hapless protagonist is taught to crochet by the activist nun who was jailed for acting out her beliefs.

Does this remind you of your first time crocheting?

One of the really powerful prisoners had this gorgeous afghan in her cell. Here it is clearly being used to hide something…

All of us know that crochet is a great way to pass the time. Prisoners know that as well, I guess! Have you spotted crochet on TV or in movies lately?

Can you give us the pattern for this hat? Have you made a pattern or hat like this? They seem very popular now. I saw the football players wearing hats like this on there way into the locker room Sunday for a game.

I noticed the hat and the throws in Orange is the New Black and I’m so please someone else noticed too.

The Middle has that huge throw, but I think it’s knitted (I crocheted a similar one for a friend). Anyway, they have a bunch of other throws and afghans in the show. The Conjuring had a couple of ripple throws — very ’70s colors. Of course, there’s the Breaking Bad White Household afghan.

It’s a lot of fun seeing crocheted items on the screen.

I’d love to find that hat pattern, too. Anybody know where to get it? Thanks

Hi ladies! We do have a brimmed hat pattern that is similar. You can find it in the hat section (bottom of page): http://www.crochetspot.com/store/?category=3
Feel free to leave off the front embellishment if you desire 🙂

This is hilarious to me because as I was watching Walking Dead last night I saw Michonne’s shirt and thought to myself “I wonder if that’s crocheted…” You can see it here: http://goo.gl/OuEnYW

I am always noticing crochet in TV shows, making my kids laugh at me. You see a lot of crocheted throws on the back of the couch when they are trying to show a standard middle class home, usually grannies or ripples. One I love is the granny square throw with bright pink borders around and connecting the squares on Parks and Recreation. So much fun!

I saw a granny square afghan made with different ombré shades on the Millers. I thought it was so pretty, and now I can’t find the same yarn. I will keep looking so I can make one of my own

I have made 3 granny square afghans, using black in between rows of variegated, and solids. I mix up the combination, such as 1 row black, next row variegated, 1 row black, then 1 row solid, etc, keeping the pattern going. Then the next square may be 2 rows of black, 2 rows of a solid color, then 2 rows of black, then 2 rows of variegated. I just keep changing the sequence around, always put black between the rows of solid and variegated. I’ve had special orders for three of those afghans now, just in the last year. Of course, no two are alike, but they have the same theme! I like the black because it really makes the colors POP!!

In one episode of The Big Bang Theory you can see a colorful granny square blanket thrown over the back of Amy’s couch. I don’t remember which episode it was though, sorry.
