Crochet “Me Time”

By Caissa "Cami" McClinton – 7 Comments

Are you a people-pleaser? I think most of us can be, at least some of the time. Truly, the busy winter holidays are a time when we find ourselves pulled in many different directions. For the past few weeks I’ve given you ideas of gifts to give and make. I love this and I think it’s exciting, but at the same time, we can get wrapped up in doing all of this crafting for others and our beloved hobby can actually stress us out!

If we find ourselves creating mostly to please others, then maybe it’s time for a change or a break. Maybe we’re ready for some Crochet “Me Time!”

Is there a project you’ve really wanted to work on that you just haven’t found the time to begin? Is there a garment or accessory that you’d really like in your wardrobe that you just can’t seem to find or keep putting off making? Or do you just want to relax and reconnect with your inner self in a way that is meaningful to you? Truthfully, your “Crochet Me Time” may or may not include crochet! You might need a complete break from the craft in order to rejuvenate your interest, or you may decide to work on projects that are completely your own. You make that decision, because it’s your time!

Allowing Yourself to Take Time
Life is stressful and taking a break every once in a while is important. Even just an hour or two can make a huge difference in your life and create a feeling of balance. Don’t feel a bit guilty for blocking out some time in your calendar to do whatever it is you’d like. If people demand your time then, simply explain that you have something else prioritized and you’ll get back to them later. One or two hours, sometimes even a whole day away is not going to break a relationship in most cases. Most of the time, it can wait. And the other people will be okay. When you return to your life refreshed, you’ll be all the better able to handle things!

Crafting Your Crochet “Me Time”
The choice is individual, but if it were me, I would find a really special, independently owned cafe that I absolutely love and go there. I would order a cup of something warm and wonderful, like a sweet Chai latte or an exotic coffee roast. I would curl up in the comfy chair they have there and lose myself in the bliss of crochet.

In my bag I’d have some luscious and captivating yarn, a journal, my tablet, a few crocheting magazines, and hooks of all sizes. I’d use my tablet to access patterns if they strike my fancy, check out crochet blogs for inspiration, and catch up on Ravelry gossip. I’d also have my favorite music and podcasts pre-loaded so I could enjoy moments immersed in my own craft.

I’d jot any notes in my journal, in case I was struck by inspiration or remembered something important I needed to do later. If I can jot it down and I review it later, then I can stay in the moment and just have my Crochet “Me Time.”

I’m happy I signed up for this newsletter. The above article, in particular, points to something I really need to do. Thanks!

I feel guilty crocheting if the house is not clean-clean, if there’s a load of laundry that could be done. Don’t want to start something if close to time to fix supper. Had back injury about 10 years ago which left me disabled and ever so slow getting things done. Plus I usually nap in the afternoon. Luck that I have very understanding husband who wouldn’t say a word other encouragement. I have more than plenty of yarn & patterns. I just can’t get past the guilt.

Janice, I hereby absolve you of the guilt! Taking some time to yourself can be really helpful, so I hope you can do it once in a while. As far as not starting a project before fixing supper, maybe you can sneak in just a few stitches on an easy project. Good luck!

Thank you so much. I am trying. Started looking for something simple, maybe couple dish cloths, to start with. Get me back in crocheting grove and having finished accomplishment quickly. I won’t give up!

I now have my Crochet “me time” where I work my craft alone. Other days an east coast friend and I get together on the phone crocheting together exchanging ideas and pictures of our wip. Most think we’re nuts and laugh. My “me time” is certainly welcome.
