Crochet Pattern: Extra Large Coaster

Do you have one of those super big cups that holds a ton of coffee (or whatever it is that you drink)? If so, I bet those tiny standard sized coasters just don’t work for you. So here is the extra large coaster pattern, made just for you and your ginormous cup! If this doesn’t work for your cup, I don’t know what will.

Skill Level: beginner crochet skill level
crochet extra large coaster

Finished Size: 5 1/2″ (14 cm) in diameter

Materials:
Medium Weight Yarn (approximately 25 yards of main color and small amount of contrasting color)
Note: if you intend to you this coaster as a hot pad or trivet, do not use acrylic yarn, since it may melt.
Crochet Hook I (5.50 mm)

crochet yarn size 4

Gauge: not that important for this pattern.

I love this, thanx Rachel. This is really useful for me and my ginormous green mug lol (*.*) which I love. A skinny coaster just won’t do.

what does “12 ch from hook” mean? am i to just continue it around my ch4 or am i supposed to create a somewhat second layer?

    • Rachel says:

After you chain 4, you are going to make 12 double crochets in the forth chain from your hook (which is also the first chain you made). That’s what the “12 dc in forth ch from hook” is telling you to do.

I am just beginning to crochet and I attempted to make coasters but I am confused with the slip stitch…. I dont understand which chain stitch I’m supposed to use to make the slip stitch to connect it all together… please help… btw I love your website!!

    • Rachel says:

Hi Holly, you will make your slip stitch into the top of the ch-3 that you made at the beginning of the round. Since you made 3 chains at the beginning, the top of the chain is the third chain that you made. Let me know if you have other questions!

Hi Rachel, in your Extra Large Coaster pattern you say after round 3 you should have 36 dc. Then row4 says 42 dc . Every time I end ur with 48 dc. What am I doing wrong?
