Crochet Pattern: Mermaid Tail Blanket (3 Sizes)

This pattern contains 3 sizes: toddler, child, and adult. Crochet a cute, mermaid tail blanket for anyone in the family. You can even crochet mother and daughter matching blankets. If you’re looking for an in-between size, this pattern is also easily adjusted to make it any size you desire. No sewing is required for this pattern. The blanket is crocheted in the round from the bottom up using an easy shell stitch pattern. The tail is crocheted with varying stitches of different heights to create the unique, curved shape.

Just printed out my pattern. Working on the gauge swatch now. The stitch pattern looks like scales. I may have to use a size smaller hook. My swatch was slightly bigger than it is supposed to be. Using Red Heart with Love. So far so good.

Help with Mermaid Cocoon
J hook and I hook samples came out with approx the same dimensions. 9 rows = 5 inches. Width =51/2 -6 inches
J hook has more give/stretch. I hook stitches are not as stretchy but look nicer.
Crocheting around the ring (Tail end correct?) – With the J hook, My beginning 1st 3 rows = approx 20 inches around and 2 inches wide. Which is the better choice hook sze? My Granddaughter is 8 years old.

I would go with the I hook in your case. Yes, you are starting at the tail end, near where the feet will go. I hope your granddaughter loves it 🙂
I’ve made it to round 50 with the J hook and it looks beautiful in Red Heart w/Love in teals, blues, Jades and aquas. My granddaughter is 8 and is tall so I will probably continue beyond the Child size. Thanks explaining how to make the slit in the back. This will keep me from worrying that it will not be wide enough at the top. Do you have those measurements?
Yes, the width that is listed in the finished size is the measurement at the top.
Hi Rachel. Purchased the pattern to make this for my 16 year old daughter. Was wondering if you had ever made this with a partial opening in the back? I’m taking it to be a “cocoon” all the way around, with no split opening in the back to get it on easier.
How difficult would it be to put in a split opening? Would it change the look of the stitches in a very noticeable way (as I am assuming that the work would now have to be turned at the end of each row)?

Hi Sue!
You can easily change it to have a split in the back. When you get to the rows where you want the split to be, simply omit the slip stitch join at the end of each row. Each row is already worked by turning your work, so it will look exactly the same except the beginning and end of the row will not be joined together.
I found the blanket to be easy to get on and off, since the top is fairly wide. But I can see how a split in the back would be even more convenient. Let me know if you need more help with it!
I’m coming into the stretch now and have completed the row 61 increase and a few more rows, measuring 20 inches across the top. I think this will be fine just the way it is. No need for the slit. I am going to make it a bit longer as the yarn tightens up after washing and drying. The top can be worn folded over if it is too long. I’m very pleased with the outcome.
