Crochet Pattern: Star Beret

This nice-sized, somewhat slouchy beret is great for everyday wear. It has a fun star pattern in the center of the back and vents that let it breathe while the denser stitches around the opening keep the whole thing looking structured and secure. If you’re a hat person, this beret is a nice addition to your collection.

Skill Level:

Finished Size: 11 1/2″ (29 cm) diameter, 21″ (53.5 cm) opening (will fit most adults)

Materials:
Medium Weight Yarn (175 yards)
Crochet Hook J (6.0 mm)

Gauge:
Rows 1-2 measure 3 1/2 in. (9 cm) in diameter.

Crochet Pattern: Star Beret
Round 1: Make an adjustable ring, ch 3 (counts as first dc), 10 dc in ring, sl st in top of beg ch-3: 11 dc
Round 2: Ch 4, sk first dc, tr in next dc, ch 4, (tr in same dc, sk 1 dc, tr in next dc, ch 4) around, sl st in top of beg ch-4: 30 sts
Round 3: Ch 3, 2 dc in first st, (dc in next st, 2 dc in next st) around, sl st in top of beg ch-3: 45 dc
Round 4: Ch 4, sk first dc, tr in next dc, ch 1, (tr in same dc, sk 1 dc, tr in next dc, ch 1) around, sl st in top of beg ch-4: 66 sts
Round 5: Ch 3, dc in first 4 sts, 2 dc in next st, (dc in next 5 sts, 2 dc in next st) around, sl st in top of beg ch-3: 77 dc
Round 6: Ch 5, dtr in first dc (ch 3, sk 3 dc, dtr in next 4 dc) around until 5 dc remain, ch 3, sk 3 dc, dtr in last 2 dc, sl st in top of beg ch-5: 77 sts
Rounds 7-9: Ch 3, dc in each st around, sl st in top of beg ch-3: 77 dc
Round 10: Ch 3, dc in first 3 dc, dc3tog, (dc in next 4 dc, dc3tog), sl st in top of beg ch-3: 55 dc
Round 11: Ch 3, dc in first 2 dc, dc2tog, (dc in next 3 dc, dc2tog), sl st in top of beg ch-3: 44 dc
Round 12: Ch 4, tr in each dc across, sl st in top of beg ch-4: 44 tr
Finish off.

    I’m having trouble with round 4. No matter what I can’t get more than 45 sts…:( rounds 1-3 have correct sts…
