Crochet Pattern: Tasseled Mug Rug

By Caissa "Cami" McClinton – 5 Comments
What’s a mug rug? It’s bigger than a coaster, and smaller than a placemat. While sitting on your desk or side table, it can accommodate your cup and also a small snack. Mug rugs show their beauty even while being used. For these reasons, I knew I had to make a mug rug. The pattern is easy and addictive. Soon you’ll be making mug rugs in many different color combinations. Crochet a Mug Rug Free Pattern by Caissa McClinton @artlikebread for @crochetspot

Skill Level:

Finished Size: 5 3/8″ (14 cm) wide, 6 1/2″ (16.5 cm) tall without tassels

Sport Weight Yarn (approximately 25 yards of main color)
Embroidery Floss or Lace Weight Yarn for tassels
Crochet Hook E (3.50 mm)
crochet yarn size 3

Gauge is not hugely important for this project, because it will be used on a table. However, I got the following gauge in filet (dc, ch1) pattern
9 (dc, ch1) = 4.25″
11 rows = 4″
Gauge measurements were taken from blocked fabric.

Note: beginning ch 3 counts as 1 dc througout pattern.
Row 1: ch 28, dc in sixth ch from hook *ch 1, skip 1 ch, dc into next ch, repeat from * across: 13 dc
Row 2: ch 4, turn, skip first dc, skip 1 ch, dc in next dc, *ch 1, skip 1 ch, dc in next dc, repeat from * across: 13 dc
Repeat row 2 until your piece measures about 6″ in length. Approximately 15 rows. Finish off.

Leaving an 8″ tail, and using two strands of embroidery floss held together, chain 65. Finish off and leave another 8″ tail. Repeat 8 times. Feel free to use different colors! Weave chains over and under the spaces of the coaster lengthwise, and weave the chain back to finish weaving where you began. Secure ends with a crochet hook. Trim tassels to 2″ long. Use extra ends to make tassels on other end with a crochet hook.

I’ve been using a crocheted washcloth and doily in the bathroom/bedroom for drying make-up brushes, bathroom cups, toothbrushes and water bottles etc. Now I will have to make an official Mug Rug for myself and friends. My hubby could use one for his desk. Thanks for the great idea Cami and the cute name.
