Join-as-you-go Motifs

By Claire Ortega-Reyes – August 31st, 2011 14 Comments

As a crochet beginner, I steered clear of granny squares and other crochet projects made with motifs. Don’t get me wrong–I loved the look of crocheted motifs and how each little part plays a big role in the shape and look of each piece. I didn’t make motif projects simply because I wasn’t confident with my sewing skills–skills I thought were vital in completing motif projects.

When I discovered join-as-you-go motifs, a whole new world of crochet opened up for me. I didn’t have to sew all the motifs together! The last row of each motif is matched up to a corresponding side of the previous motif, and slip stitches are made in place of chain spaces. Here it is at work with my Magical Market Bag Pattern:

Life Getting in the Way of Crocheting?

By Veronica Smith – August 30th, 2011 17 Comments

I saw a T-Shirt on a random stranger that said “Life is what happens to you while you are making other plans”. It’s true isn’t it?

I just think things would go a lot more smoothly in my life if there was less of the annoying stuff like cleaning, and more of the stuff that involved yarns and threads – just my opinion. I have such grand plans for my crocheting, I would eventually like to start my own online store selling ‘one-off’ hand crafted items. I thought I’d start with an Etsy or Ebay store first and build my empire from there.

Crochet Pattern: Laptop Sleeve

By Rachel Choi – August 28th, 2011 6 Comments
New in the Crochet Spot Store, this laptop sleeve pattern can be customized to your liking! Pick your 2 favorite colors to get started. Feel free to alternate colors each row to create stripes or sew on cute appliques when you’re done. Use the instructions within the pattern to adjust the size to fit your laptop. Make your sleeve as tight as possible (as yarn will stretch) if you don’t want it slipping and sliding when you pick it up.

It’s quick, easy and fun to make, and in no time, you can have one in every color. It also works as a pretty little introduction to post stitches and how they can be used to add texture to your work. Crochet Pattern: Delta Soap Saver

By Claire Ortega-Reyes – August 25th, 2011 8 Comments
Spa products are typically pricey-but in reality you can make your own! One of my favorites are soap savers. They actually save you money by making the most of soap bars, make sure your soap doesn’t jump out of your hands, and also give you extra exfoliation. The great news is, they are easy to make! Rachel has already shared some fantastic patterns: 5 Simple Soap Savers and Absolutely Easy Soap Saver. These patterns use medium weight yarn; and so I decided to try my hand on a thread version.

Crochet Pattern: Bookworm Bookmark

By Emilee Gettle – August 24th, 2011 11 Comments
It’s hard to believe that summer is winding down. Since it’s back to school time, I thought a bookmark would be the perfect project. This little bookworm will keep your place in the latest read or textbook. You can make him as short or long as you want. You could also make each little medallion, that makes up his wiggly body, a different color. I’m going to use this same little worm as an applique on baby blankets and toddler shirts too. This little guy is so versatile and a snap to make! There are a million and one variations and A+ applications. Have fun!

To Buy or Not to Buy

By Veronica Smith – August 23rd, 2011 27 Comments

I am so very proud of myself. I am going to make a toy Lion for my nephew’s upcoming 2nd birthday and I am using yarn I already have! Sounds logical doesn’t it? I have so much yarn, however nothing that quite qualified for a lion. I then realized that he is going to be 2 years old and really won’t know if the color is a bit off. So, out of the stash it comes. I do love buying yarn though and I am wondering how much the joy of purchasing some more yarn was overshadowing my logic on color choices.

Meet Candace Barr, a Crochet Spot Blogger!

By Candace – August 22nd, 2011 9 Comments

First, I want to say hi to everyone and thank you for your kind words about my posts. I’m glad to be able to share my ideas with all of you.

I have been crochetng since I was 19 years old. I actually started not long after I first picked up my kntting needles. Since then, I’ve also learned to spin. My fiber stash is a testament to my love of things that are different–the colors and fibers are quite diverse, as is my shopping list. While I have acquired a deeper appreciation of the “good stuff”–soft wools, alpaca, silk, camel, cashmere, and all the rest–I still like a good, washable acrylic.

I also enjoy writing and reading as well as drawing, making jewelry, learning languages (I’m working on my fourth), and cooking. Basically, I like to learn and create.

Crochet Pattern: Everyday Backpack

By Rachel Choi – August 20th, 2011 3 Comments
New in the Crochet Spot Store, this classic backpack can be used for school, work, traveling, or anything else you may need it for in your everyday life! This bag has a large main compartment, which can fit books, clothing, kid’s toys, etc. The small pocket on the front is great for easy access to smaller items, such as your cell phone or keys. The large crocheted buttons work very well in keeping your belongings securely in the bag. Feel free to line the inside of the bag and underside of the straps if you’d like to give the bag extra strength and prevent the stitches from stretching.

Crochet Pattern: Regal Cuffs

By Claire Ortega-Reyes – August 18th, 2011 19 Comments
Wearing cuffs is a great way to extend your wardrobe, and keep your wrists and hands warmer too.

Fast and easy, simple yet feminine, the Regal Cuffs have a stretchy main body that hugs the wrists (no need to bother with closures) and a shell edging that looks like a royal crown.
