The kids are out of school and it’s undeniably summer up here in the northern hemisphere! That means it’s time for some favorite summer activities like gardening, camping, and cooking out! Summer is so much fun that sometimes we let crochet fall to the wayside because we’re busy with different things to do. Bulky sweaters are all the rage these days and I’m just as guilty over loving them as anyone else. But for those times when you want something to wear with your turtle-neck or some other favorite fitted shirt, try this bulky bobble stitch infinity scarf. It’s plump and comfortable, just like that sweater, while remaining incredibly stylish. Add a rose for an accent and you’re on your way! Made with a bulky yarn and a large crochet hook, this pattern is worked in the round and takes very little time to complete. The rose is made in a long strip and then wrapped around itself and sewn.

Recently I have written a couple of posts on making expandable geometric motifs, the Expanding Pentagon Motif, and the Expanding Geometric Motif Crochet Tutorial, where each shape follows a similar design. Unfortunately, not all shapes can be created so simply. My method is based on the amount of identical sides a shape has. But in the case of a diamond, for example, there are the same number of sides as a square but all sides are not identical.

After reading a comment by a reader requesting help while using my tutorial to make a rhombus, or diamond, I set about making the necessary changes. So here is a pattern in the same expanding design but for a more unique shape!

Right, so… When I started crocheting in 2008 or so, I began by reading one of the best ever crochet books ever, Debbie Stoller’s Stitch N’ Bitch Crochet, the Happy Hooker. It continues to be a mainstay of the crochet community and perhaps the most comprehensive “all-in-one” crochet manual out there. But that’s besides the point. In the introduction, Stoller brought voice to something weird that was out there in the yarn crafting conversation, as well as the crafting community at large – a serious division between crochet and knitting.

Turtles are pretty cool creatures. They swim, they fight bad guys, and they love to eat pizza! This turtle may not have any ninja moves, but he just may come in handy. Remove his shell, and he can hold your treasures for you. You can also sew his shell and belly together to create a stuffed toy. This pattern is quick to crochet as it uses bulky weight yarn.

I’m here to tell you it is okay. Good crocheters sometimes make ugly things! I’m not talking about things that are so ugly they’re cute. Because as creative people, that would be something we would have meant to do. I’m also not talking about “ugly pretty,” which is a term most often used on America’s Next Top Model. The way it would translate into crochet might be the captivating effect of when you bring two garish yarn colors together and they look so interesting together that you love the outcome. For a great style, and necessary warmth for those cold days, this beret is sure to come in handy! The brim is made onto the beret using double strands and simple crochet stitches, while the band and button add the finishing touch. Being typically the beret-only type of girl, this brimmed design was a new twist for me. I really enjoyed designing it and I hope you will have as much fun making it!

After watching an episode of Mission: Impossibe (the 60’s TV series) I saw a lovely lemon yellow belt paired with a navy blue suit and matching yellow pumps. My fashion interest was piqued. I set about making a similar belt pattern, complete with lemon yellow yarn. And now you can too! Belts are all the rage these days because they highlight nearly any outfit. The best thing about them though is that they are incredibly simple to make. All you need is some yarn, a crochet hook, and a belt buckle, and you can whip one of these up in no time!
