Too Cold to Crochet?

By Rachel Choi – 9 Comments

I’ve heard the excuse that it’s too hot to crochet, but never that it’s too cold. But this week felt like it for me. Although the weather isn’t freezing here in PA, with the heater not working, it sure seems like it.

When I go to pick up my crochet hook, I wished it wasn’t metal, knowing how cold metal is when it’s left sitting in a cold room. Perhaps that’s why plastic hooks can be great. Even as I work with the hook, it does warm up, but my hands don’t! I thought about wearing gloves, but they just get in the way.

Instead of crocheting, I should have ran around the house to keep warm. Or if I’m brave enough, I could have crocheted while running…but I’ll save that challenge for a different day.

Have you ever felt that it was too cold to crochet?

I’ve never felt it was too cold to crochet, but I know about the cold hook thing. So I sometimes tuck it in my sweater pocket or slip it under my leg to let it warm up while I get my yarn and project ready to go. Then, when I’m ready, my hook is toasty warm. (And I save afghan projects for cold weather! I can still cover up while I work, especially as the afghan gets bigger!)

It’s never too cold to crochet, but I’ve had trouble with the coolness of the metal hooks making the arthritis in my hands hurt. At one point I quit crocheting because crocheting for just a little while would make my hands hurt for days.

I have found a solution, though. The wooden hooks are awesome! They are so warm and soft. I highly recommend them for anyone having troubles with cold, metal hooks.

When its super cold I love working on big afghan projects and using them to cover up with.

As far as the cold hook thing goes, my fiancee bought me an awesome set of hooks with bamboo handles. They are alot easier to hold and the part that you touch never gets cold!

    Happy stitching!

    Hi,
I have found that it’s too cold to crochet sometimes. I live in Victoria B.C. and when I haven’t turned the heat on in the morning I just want to sit there and snuggle up with a blanket. I do have cold extremities naturally though. Maybe I will try crocheting an afghan. Recommend any patterns? I’m a fairly good probably intermediate/almost advanced crocheter and am having problems choosing. 🙂

I definitely get too cold to crochet. I have poor circulation in my hands and I can’t stand for them not be tucked under a blanket. Even when I crochet they don’t warm up, they stay freezing.

Have you tried the “Comfort Grip” crochet thingies made by Kahoot? I got mine at Joann’s website and they are really cheap. I haven’t tried them on cold crochet hooks cause it hasn’t gotten cold enough to tell if they would help or not but it seems they would. They are little foam sleeves that you slide over your hook to make them more comfortable. Stands to reason they would be warmer, too.

I too live in PA, and i actually found the fingerless gloves and made them from your site so that it was NOT so unbearable to crochet 🙂
