Soldier’s Angels

Posted in News on June 25th, 2011 by Rachel Choi – 5 Comments

I recently received an email from a Crochet Spot reader telling me about a non-profit organization called Soldier’s Angels. Her passion for the organization was so infectious that I had to write a post about it and share it with you all. Soldiers’ Angels is a volunteer-led 501(c)(3) nonprofit with hundreds of thousands of volunteers providing aid and comfort to the men and women of the United States Army, Marines, Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard, veterans and their families.

Through Soldier’s Angels crocheters like us can create and send items that are needed. There is a wide range of items that are accepted, not all are necessarily crocheted items, from blankets, snacks and goodies, t-shirts, CD’s, etc. Feel free to visit their site for the whole list! The most interesting part of the organization is that you can “adopt a soldier”, meaning you’ll send a letter each week and a care package each month to a particular person. How great is that?

To get involved or to lean more about Soldier’s Angels please visit the Soldier’s Angels website. You can also find more charities that you may be interested in on the Crochet Spot Charity Page.

Have fun crocheting for a good cause!!

Crochet Pattern: Vortex Tawashi

Posted in Free Crochet Patterns on June 24th, 2011 by Claire Ortega-Reyes – 14 Comments
Just can’t get enough of tawashis? I know the feeling all too well. Here’s a tawashi with elements I love: texture, one-piece construction, and spiral work. Another feature I love in tawashis? Practicality. This tawashi makes chores a little easier on your hands, with a pocket-like construction–no need to concentrate on your grip while cleaning!
Texture is made by making stitches in the back loops only (blo) of stitches. The front is worked in a spiral, and the project continues back and forth in rows for the back, to make the pocket. A few chains are made for the loop, and a simple slip stitch border wraps up this handy project. Made with medium weight yarn and size H hook, this project works up fast.

We Speak a Different Language

Posted in Fun Ramblings, Tutorials and Help on June 21st, 2011 by Veronica Smith – 22 Comments

With the exception of the obvious dialects around the world, the language our forefathers spoke, we all speak another language to each other but can actually understand each other. As far as spoken language I am only versed in English, toddler, and teenager – for those of you without toddlers and teenagers, believe me, they speak a different language.

As I write these stories each week I write in English, or more precisely, Australian. After I have finished my writing I then go over it all and make it American. Rachel prefers me to write in American. You would be surprised how many words are different.

Crochet Pattern: Barbie Doll Summer Dresses

Posted in Best Crochet Patterns on June 19th, 2011 by Rachel Choi – 6 Comments

New in the Crochet Spot Store, these 3 summer style dresses are crocheted without having to sew pieces together! Each dress has a tight fit, since they are to be made using size 10 thread. The dresses are all secured to the dolls using tie straps rather than traditional Velcro or snaps so you don’t have to worry about sewing or gluing them on. Although these dress are shown in the photo on a Barbie doll, they will also fit other fashion dolls of the same size.

Crocheting a Pattern or Using a Tutorial from Crochet Spot?

Posted in Fun Ramblings on June 18th, 2011 by Veronica Smith – 8 Comments

Well, Rachel has out witted me again. This article that you are reading, well the one with the above title – she sabotaged me. I thought it was a good idea, I had it ¾ written and then I went to the Crochet Spot home page for something and what was there staring me in the face??? Hmmmmmm??? “Submit Your Crochet Pictures!”.

Well I got all bent out of shape there for a bit, just because this is her site she shouldn’t steal my ideas should she? Even though she had no idea I was writing a post about making stuff from this site. Maybe she could have mentioned she is psychic.

5 Things I Wish I Had Known as a Crochet Newbie

Posted in Tutorials and Help on June 15th, 2011 by Claire Ortega-Reyes – 18 Comments

Pliny the Elder had written, “Experience is the most efficient teacher of all things.” I personally discovered that statement true enough—specially when it came to my crocheting. As a newbie I didn’t know much about the “proper” way of doing things. I made a LOT of mistakes that resulted in catastrophically funny FO’s (finished objects). Here are five things I learned, the HARD way:

Crochet Pattern: 3 Box Set

Posted in Best Crochet Patterns on June 12th, 2011 by Rachel Choi – 3 Comments

New in the Crochet Spot Store, this pattern set is for 3 different sized boxes with lids that are great for using as gift boxes or for storing small items. The boxes are designed to be nesting, so that the smaller boxes fit perfectly into a larger box for easy storage when not in use. Each piece is crocheted in the round so that no sewing is required. The pieces are also designed with defined corners, unlike other boxes that are crocheted in the round. The pattern uses tight half double crochet stitches to make each box quick to crochet.
