Do All Crocheters Have Cats?

By Rachel Choi – 255 Comments
I always thought that the correlation between crocheters and cats was just a myth, until I started to realize that a lot of my crochet friends have cats. Even I have a cat!

Is it just a coincide or do most crocheters have a cat? Maybe cats are just popular to have as a pet. Or perhaps, crocheters are more fond of a cat companion since they both like yarn.

cat

Let’s have an experiment to find out once and for all if there really is a correlation between cats and crocheters! This is by far, not a real scientific experiment, but will sure be fun to take part in.

So the question is, are you a crocheter? And do you have a cat? Leave a comment to share!

Yes I love to crochet, and I love my cats! I have four cats. I am always making something for them, from toys filled with catnip to little rugs for them to cuddle on. They are very happy that I learned how to crochet 🙂

  2. Alhana says:

I crochet and I don’t have a cat but am very fond of them. It’s just I can’t own any pet at the moment. But I will! 😀

  3. Annette says:

I have 6 cats and I am always fighting them for the yarn! They sometimes win.

  4. Laura says:

I have three cats, though two of them are indoor/outdoor (I live on a farm). Mercy (an orange tabby rescue) and Cheyenne (a long-haired tortoise-shell born to one of our barn cats) love “helping” with my crochet. Boy Blue (a fluffy Himalayan) just likes to sit on my yarn so I’ll pay attention to him instead!

  5. Lynn says:

Yes, I crochet and I have 2 cats. Both are males, both black and white, one long hair and one short hair. They are both lap cats and like to be right in the middle of whatever I’m doing. 🙂

  6. Donna says:

All crocheters do not have cats. I love crochet and I do not have cats. I have dogs.

  7. Geri says:

I have a few cats and one dog who loves them very much. We’re getting a puppy tomorrow tho.
The cats try to play with my yarn when I’m crocheting, then get distracted by something else. Usually each other LOL

  8. Rachael says:

Yup! I have one cat who likes to steal my yarn while I’m working with it.

  9. Amanda says:

I don’t have a cat, I have a big red dog! She loves to chase balls of yarn though, so maybe she THINKS she is a cat!

  10. Antonia says:

I have 2 cats & 1 dog. Or should I say they have me? I am always stashing & hiding my yarn & work. The cats seem to thing everything is their resting spot.

  11. Darlene says:

Yes indeed! I much prefer crochet to knit AND I have two cats. Hussein is my 6-year-old female and Donald is my 23 month-old male. All my projects have lots of cat hair in them.

  12. Denise says:

I’m a crocheter and I have a pug. No plans on getting cats, ever. Because I’m also a librarian and I don’t want to fit all the stereotypes. As long as I keep my hair short, there will be at least two I don’t match.

But I do want catseye glasses.

Most of the knitters I know have cats. I think it’s more a girl thing than a fiber thing.

  13. Ame says:

I’ve been crocheting for years and years, and some of those years I had a cat or two. Then I found out that I am terribly allergic to my feline friends, so I had to give them up. I’m really a dog person anyway, and have two huge dogs in the house now to show for it. The best part of having dogs is you never have to fight them for your yarn. The little cuddlies I make using yarn…..that’s a whole different story……

  14. Chris says:

Yep! Me too! But, ten years ago I decided to be cat-free. Fortunately, I left the door open one day and in walked a very pregnant stray cat looking for a safe place to have her babies. She had the babies in my bedroom and she’s still with me today.

  15. Louise says:

Guilty on both counts, love crochet and have 2 cats.xx

  16. Victoria says:

My husband and I are both anti-pet hair, so NO cats for me, just yarn and hooks:)

  17. I’ve crocheted since I was 9 and have had cats even longer! Can’t imagine life without a fur baby, or without crocheting! I recently tore my rotator cuff, but discovered that even if I couldn’t move my arm, if I modified the way I held my hook, I could still crochet! Right now I have 2 shelter babies that are 12 years old…Bubba, a grey and white boy, and Pumpkin, a gorgeous brown tabby and white girl. Pumpkin couldn’t care less about yarn, but Bubba is my crochet buddy. He’s either in my lap right in the middle of everything, on the floor, mouthing the yarn as it pulls from the skein, or slapping around at any little piece of yarn or project that moves! who needs to buy expensive angora yarn? My projects are always nice and fluffy with Bubba fur!

  18. Oh yes, I forgot to say something. Have you noticed how folks with dogs frequently say how they hate or can’t stand cats? I don’t know any cat lovers who “can’t stand” dogs. Wonder why that is?

  19. Cindy says:

Metta, I was thinking the same thing!

Nope! No cats at my house. I’ve got two big dogs who love to shred yarn if they can get a hold of it.

Yep! 🙂 Love crocheting/knitting and have a white-red huge crazy cat named Julius. But in my case the cat came first – there was at least one cat in our house since I can remember.

  31. Etta says:

I love kitties but am allergic. We have 2 Brittany Spaniels. Willow,2, and Mandy 14. Willow loves to smuggle yarn or not. I’ve been crocheting since I was 5, over 50 years.

  34. MariAngel says:

I have always had a cat in my life and I’ve been crocheting since I was a teenager, many more years than I care to remember LOL
I’ve also had dogs during my life, my Bella was my last 10 years ago and I doubt I’ll ever find a dog that could replace her, so cats it is.
We were adopted by a lovely Bengal 9 years ago who rules the roost with a gentle paw. He loves to sit with me while I crochet. Amazingly he doesn’t play with the balls of yarn or abscond with any of my work. He just lays on my lap and watches my hands as I work. Secretly, I think he thinks he’s a dog LOL

  35. Jo says:

Love to crochet…. not a cat fan

  36. Mercel Ann says:

I love to crochet but I own a beagle who sometimes steals a yarn ball from time to time. Perhaps he was a cat in a past life???

  37. Jamie says:

I do crochet; my husband and I have 3 cats.

  38. LynneMary says:

We don’t have cats. We have a bird and a wonderful dog.

  39. Linda says:

I have a cat and crochet. My mother also crochets and has two cats.

  40. Caitlin says:

I own 2 cats and crochet. I think crochet/knitting is part of that crazy cat lady persona haha. My grey and white younger girl either tries to steal/eat my yarn or knock my hooks of the coffee table or doesn’t care. My 11 year old siamese usually sleeps on my lap when I crochet to the point where she is covered in yarn and my growing project but doesn’t care. She usually doesn’t even try to bat or chew on the yarn either.I think she likes donating her hair to my projects. I think everyone I have made has some of her fur crocheted into them.

  41. Jeannie says:

I crochet. I don’t have a cat, but I am living with a family that has two cats. I’ve taken over feeding the cats, and I really enjoy their company.

  42. Carey b says:

I love crochet and have been sence I was 8 and I do not have cats. I have 8 dogs.

  43. Susan says:

I love to crochet. I don’t have a cat, but I have had plenty in my lifetime. I love cats…and dogs…and hamsters…and birds…and flying squirrels…etc. If my husband would let me have a cat, I would! I feel lucky that he likes dogs enough to put up with four of them. I would much rather have 1 cat and 1 dog, though! Lol!

  44. Jen says:

Yep, I love to crochet and I love my cats and dogs! I always have a couple of them cuddled up with me while I’m crocheting. I’m constantly having to pick the fur out of my work, lol!

  45. Debbie says:

No cats here, but four dogs! Does that count?? Yes, I am a crocheter.

  46. Sallie says:

I have a Blue Chow no cats, he might eat them!

I learned to crochet before before I had a cat. I’ve had many cats and they all liked to take off with the yarn except the one I have now. He steals the crochet hooks !

    Crocheting and Cats

I lost my cat of 16 years in 2006 I had had him since he was 8 weeks. He was a orange calico. I thought myself and my daughter were going to die, when we had to have him put to sleep. Everytime someone asked about him, I cried. He was my Buddy and Protector. His name was Pumpkin, but we called him Punkin. and he loved it when i crocheted. Him on one side of me and the yarn on the other.

Two years ago I got another cat. My husbands friend had the mother cat. The mother didn’t care for him, so he was very small. He nursed on my neck with the vets permission for comfort. move He is now two years old and huge, I think his father was a black panther. He now sleeps with his nose under my chin. He sleeps between my hubby and i. I asked him one time did Pumpkin send you, and he jumped and looked right at me when I said Pumpkin..
He likes my yarn too much, I have to hide it or he will unravel it, So I give him his own yarn ball while I am crocheting.
Right now I am crocheting him a harness and leash. I can’t wait till I can take him in the back yard, then maybe the birds that tease him while he is in the house will think twice.

  49. Sandra McElvenny says:

    Hi,
Yes I have a cat. She was a rescue and I love her to pieces. She loves to pull my yarn. I come home from work and can’t find my project because she has pulled it under the bed. I enjoy your site and I have been crocheting for a very long time

  50. Jeanne says:

My best friend/roommate & I both crochet — and we have 5 cats between us! My 3 cats have all been trained that, “The yarn is MY toy, not the cat’s toy!” (and my cats literally won’t touch any yarn, whether or not I’m watching!) but since we have only lived together for 9 months so far, I’m still teaching it to her 2 cats.

But the cats are not my only pets! I also have a bunny, a bearded dragon lizard, and 4 snakes!
