Woohoo! After weeks of preparation, we’re finally ready to release the Oscar Mystery Cowl Crochet Along patterns. There are four patterns, and you choose your pattern based upon the first letter of your first name. Please check out the patterns below.

Procedure
1. Determine your pattern based upon the first letter of your first name.
2. Download the PDF copy of your pattern. (It is a good idea to keep an electronic copy even if you decide to print it, because the pattern contains clickable links to Crochet Spot tutorials.)
3. Read the pattern before beginning to make sure you understand it. Post questions about the pattern in the comment section of this post on crochetspot.com.
4. Gather your materials. The pattern calls for worsted weight yarn and a J 6.0 mm crochet hook. You will also need scissors and a yarn needle. Buttons are optional.
5. Begin the Red Carpet Section. The pattern begins and ends the same for each and every cowl. Feel free to begin the pattern prior to the Oscar Ceremony. This way you can get used to the pattern before the contest begins.
6. Mark your pattern while you watch the Oscar Ceremony. As the winners are revealed in our four key categories, mark or highlight the corresponding stitches on your pattern.
7. Crochet your cowl & finish it by March 13, 2016.
8. Take a picture and email it to [email protected] by March 13, 2016 in order to be entered for fabulous prizes!

This is going to be a different kind of thing for all of us, and lots of fun! Keep your expectations of perfection at bay and have fun over all. Don’t be afraid to slightly modify the pattern and of course post questions (and answers to others’ questions) in the comment section below. I (Caissa) will be checking the post on Oscar evening and responding in real time. I’ll also be live tweeting the CAL at #OscarCAL, so follow that hashtag from February 28 through March 13. My twitter handle is @artlikebread. Have fun, folks!

Hi. This looks like it could be fun but whilst reading through the pattern I couldn’t see section 5.

  2. Cami says:

Sarah, thank you. That is a typo. Section one is on the first page, sections 2, 3, 4, and 5 are on the second page, and section 6 is on the second page as well. Thanks for pointing that out!

This sounds like so much fun!

I am have been looking for a fun project to take my mind off my never-ending blanket. This should be great fun and a way to use up some random yarn I have around the house.

This looks like great fun. It’s going to be interesting as everyone will have something different; even colorwise. I think this will be something to chase away the last bit of winter. Thank you, Rachel!

I’m watching the red carpet right now and starting my A-D cowl. Just the foundation so far. Check out progress pics on my instagram @artlikebread #oscarcal

Sounds like a lot of fun! I don’t even know if I will be able to watch the entire Oscars – we usually only get edited versions but I love your concept and the thought that everybody will be sitting there wherever they are in the world with their pattern and crochet hooks at the ready! I also love the extra elements of chance by choosing a different pattern according to first names and having the outcome dependent on semi-random events, like a John Cage crochet project! I look forward to seeing the results of everyone’s cowls. Have fun!

Although the Oscar show itself was one of the worst I have seen in years (except for Lady Gaga), I kept watching it so get the winners for the pattern. This is alot of fun. Since perfection is not what this is about, I substituted one type of stitch in mine. The stitch the pattern called for was annoying the stitches in my hand so I substituted something that still offered texture but was easier for me to do. I can see me making a few more of these cowls for gifts using the instructions for the people who I think should have won. Hope you will do some more of these fun CAL’s.

So glad you like the pattern! I, too was up late last night waiting to see the winners. It was fun. Yes, Gaga’s performance was very moving. I am glad you enjoyed the pattern, and I am glad you switched it up a bit. And I am fully in favor of mixing and matching stitches in order to make up new cowls with your choices. Have fun!

It was a lot of fun for me. Our awards were not spaced out so I was up to date until best actress. So maybe next year I’ll do costume design instead of best actor to give us more time. Remember – you can still participate with the list of Winners! http://mobile.nytimes.com/2016/02/29/movies/oscar-winners.html

Was sooo excited about doing this activity… The first one I have ever done…. Watched the entire program and had enough time to complete before the next award was announced except for the last 3… Stayed up and completed all but last row…. Loved the experience… Learned 5 new stitches, which I never would have learned otherwise…. My second last row for “best picture ” was all single crochet, so changed to the one I wanted to win… Which was “extended crochet”…. Another new one… So off I went… Talked about my experience all day today… Knitters and crocheters were fascinated… Non yarn ppl were bored(I think)
One question….on the right side saying “after party” says double crochet.. Then right underneath says ” final row”.. They are exactly the same… Should I do final row too???
Am such a rule follower… But kept saying this is for fun,,, so let go of the fact that my final count was 86 stitches… Looks fine and am really pleased with the final outcome…. Thanks for the experience

    • Cami says:

Hey, Julie! Thanks for your lovely comment. I am glad you had fun and took liberty with the pattern. You have the right idea about the contest – if it looks good, you’re fine. Be happy with the 86 stitches! To answer your question, The After Party section is just 2 rows of double crochet. Haha! I can relate to you. I am also a rule follower. 😀 Hope this allows you to finish your cowl and I can’t wait to see it!
