Crochet Challenge 2014!

By Caissa "Cami" McClinton – 16 Comments

What do you want to do with your crochet in 2014? After the holidays settle down, hopefully you will be organizing your lovely new yarn and hook stash from generous friends and relatives. 😉 It will be time to reflect and set crochet goals for 2014.

One of the nice things about crochet is that although we can share what we do with crochet groups, charities, and of course here on Crochet Spot, crochet is an individual activity. That means our only competition can come from within ourselves. The beautiful relaxation of crochet may come in part from the knowledge that the only expectation placed upon our crochet is our own.

This is why it’s a great time to make an individual crochet challenge for 2014. Take a moment to look within yourself and ask yourself what it is you want to do with your crochet in 2014.

You may want to increase your skill set by crocheting through a set of stitch patterns. You may want to make crochet a daily habit by working yarn and hook for at least 10 minutes each day no matter what. You may want to embark upon new crochet adventures by learning a new technique such as Tunisian Crochet, Bruges Lace, Freeform Crochet, or Hairpin Lace.

You might want to make as many finished objects as possible of a certain kind, like maybe a hat a week, or a scarf per month. Maybe there is some big project you’d love to complete, but just needed the motivation. I once took almost a year to complete a beautiful granny square afghan! What about trying to design your own crochet projects?

After careful reflection, I am going to state my own crochet challenge. I would like to build crochet into my weekly schedule. This is above and beyond what I do currently. I will set aside a two- to four-hour block of time each Saturday in 2014 to increase my crochet skills, get to know new materials, design, read, and expand my knowledge! If I’m consistent, that means between 104 and 208 hours of solid crochet time. That’s good, productive fun if you ask me! 😀

There are so many different options! What will stretch your crochet abilities in 2014? Please share your Crochet Challenge for 2014 with us in the comments!

After finishing current knitting project (zippered collared jacket for son) I would like to make 2 knit/crochet dresses for my granddaughters, then work on some blankets for newest granddaughter and grandson.

Last year I had three new g.grandaughters, which gave me 4g. granddaughters and 1g. grandson. Recently I have found out that two of my granddaughters are expecting this year. One in June and one in August.

I found a pattern for a Knitted Baby Blanket, and although Knitting is not my chosen; Crochet is, I liked the pattern, because its all garter stitch. I had handle that. I also found a crochet pattern for a large granny square, but using different stitches on each round. That I will love. Its made with bright colors.

I have a large stash of yarn, so now its just to pick out what ones I want to use.I have half my year taken.

Two main goals this year. I want to learn to Knook. I’ve had the beginner’s kit since my birthday last August, and still haven’t tried it. I also want to make noticeable progress on my Cathedral Rose Window Afthan!!

Thanks Laura for mentioning Knook. I have several knook hooks and I have done it and it is actually fun! I also want to do more with plarn… making it thinner and blending it with fun fur to make some sturdy keychain change purses and maybe even a bag for my smartphone. I like to cut panty hose into loops and loops the loops together and make a nylon yarn. I am also fascinated with crocheting jewelry and maybe include my button collection. There is always something, I just need to focus and do one thing at a time. After I had a radical hysterectomy in November to remove uterus cancer (it worked… cancer free) I have had lots of time to dream of projects. I just need to get started on them!

For 2014 I would like to finally complete all my projects that I have put aside. I have never made any clothing with crochet other than scarves, hats and mittens so I want to make a sweater for myself since I always have a habit of making things for everyone else I say it is my turn. I want to also learn to do Irish lace crochet. Happy New Year everyone!

I am already hunting out some small projects patterns for our Crafts Shows this Fall. I teach a crochet class at our local Senior Center, and we make afghans for Veterans’ hospitals, Prayer Shawls for our local Hospice, and hats for various children’s hospitals. Since we are non-profit, we sell our items to make money for the yarn and the postage for the donations.

  15. Olivia says:

My crochet goals for 2014 are: to crochet one blanket each month and donate to a local charity, to make a few gifts for each member of my family this year, to finish all of my old projects, and to expand my skills by learning stitches I’ve been interested in for a while and crochet something featuring each of those stitches.
I’d also like to expand my knitting skills, particularly in lace stitches. I think I’ll knit a few scarves.
And finally I really want to learn to tat, experiment with weaving, and try spinning and dyeing my own yarn.
I’d like to start my own business to, open an Etsy store for starters, and sell my creations and patterns.
I am wishing you all the best in achieving your goals! =D

    * The wedding anniversary blanket for my husband and I – I put it to the side to make all the holiday stuff and I’m just getting back to it. Of course I decided I hate what I had done so I’m starting over 🙂 One big square blanket instead of many squares to join.

    * A baby blanket for my husband’s co-worker

    * Hats for three people – I promised hats to them years ago and still haven’t come through. So many things to learn and try!

    * Headbands for two lady friends – I haven’t made a headband before so I’m excited to get some pretty yarn and give them a try.

    * An Ewok Hoodie in elder gray – A friend loved the one I made for myself so I’m giving her the gray one I’m working on currently, and then I’ll make myself another gray one!

    * A nice new beanie for my husband – I made him one before my skills were well honed so his old hat sucks and he never wears it. I’m thinking about just scrapping it and letting him pick a pattern he likes.

    * Something with an Ingress logo – My friend plays Ingress and telling me to make him something that can sit with him while he plays is his way of supporting my yarn art 🙂

    * A motif hat and scarf for myself – A fellow crafter bought me some yarn in my favorite colors so I could make myself a hat and scarf set and I still haven’t done it yet.

    * Make a pair of slippers/socks – This has been on my list for awhile. Then I read that socks are better/easier knitted. Then I found some crochet sock patterns (before I could read patterns), and now I’ve discovered Ravelry so I know there are many options to crochet simple granny square slippers 🙂 My faith in myself and my craft is restored!!

    * Make all motifs/amigurumis in the books I own – Beyond the Square by Edie Eckman, The Granny Square Book by Margaret Hubert, and Creepy Creature Crochet by Christen Haden

    * Make something Doctor Who related – I’m a newbie fan, but I think it would be nice to make a kindle or phone Tardis case before the new season starts.

    * Catch-up with past Reddit CALs and keep trying the new ones as they happen – I freaking love the CAL!

    * Other misc. non-crochet crafts – Sew curtains/pillow cases out of clothes scraps, fix a purse that’s all ripped, and make soaps again.

I keep a revolving list so some of these items have been on a list since 2011 (I started in December of 2010). I try to sit down sometime in Dec/Jan and figure out where I’ve gotten in my crafting and where I’m trying to go. This year had been great because I have learned a lot of new things, and I can also see my stitches getting better each time I start/finish something. I can’t wait to see what I make this year 🙂
